Dog and Dog Owners Information

Belton, SC -  Important South Carolina legislative session highlights  concerning dogs and dog owners

July 20, 2022
https://www.akc.org/legislative-alerts/south-carolina-two-year-legislative-session-ends-wins-dogs-dog-owners/
The 2021-2022 South Carolina legislative session and special sessions concluded with victories for dogs and dog owners. The American Kennel Club Government Relations team (AKC GR) thanks club members, sportsmen, dog owners, allied organizations, and every individual who contacted their state lawmakers about legislation that affects dogs.
Highlights from the two-year legislative session:
House Bill 4094 contained problematic findings about “pit bull” dogs and sought to restrict ownership of and require registration with an animal control agency of “fertile” pit bulls. These requirements would have applied to “American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers,” dogs displaying the physical traits of one or more of the breeds, or a dog exhibiting the distinguishing characteristics that conform to the standards established by the AKC for any of the breeds. AKC GR strongly opposed this legislation, issued an alert, and sent a letter of concern to subcommittee members. The bill did not advance during the two-year session.
House Bill 3067 sought to require that any second violation of the state law’s Chapter on Cruelty to Animals would have required forfeiture of ownership of all animals and a prohibition from owning an animal for five years. AKC GR opposed this bill because it contained excessive penalties and mandatory restrictions for certain offenses that do not involve the care and keeping of animals, and for violations of certain provisions that do not involve harm to an animal. The bill failed sine die.
Senate Bill 186 sought to create new language regarding dog training techniques and devices, and to delete certain exemptions under current law for hunting dogs. AKC requested a clarifying amendment to protect the training and use of dogs for herding; flock guarding; vermin control; tracking, trailing, or treeing; field work; and hunting. The bill did not advance during the two-year session.
Senate Bill 556 sought to make changes to laws that govern trapping. As introduced, this bill could have increased hazards for dogs whose owners participate in field trials, Coonhound events, hunting, and training for these sports, as well as hiking, wilderness camping, and other outdoor activities with dogs. Read AKC GR’s alert on S 556 as it was originally introduced. AKC GR recommended amendments to safeguard dogs, and the bill was favorably amended in committee. It passed in the Senate, but died in House committee.
Legislation to support going forward:
AKC GR continues to support enactment of legislation similar to Senate Bill 378. This bill would have increased penalties for teasing or injuring police dogs and horses, and provided that a person convicted shall pay restitution for costs of restoring or replacing a police animal and complete 500 hours of community service. SB 378 passed in the Senate, but did not advance in House committee. AKC encourages bill sponsors to reintroduce this legislation.
Get prepared for 2023!
Problematic bills could be refiled for the 2023 session. Take time now to meet with your state senator and representative in their home districts. Let them know that you, your AKC club, and the AKC Government Relations Department are reliable and knowledgeable resources on dog issues.
2022 is an election year. Encourage fellow dog owners to register to vote. Get to know candidates for office, learn about their positions on animal issues, and support dog-friendly candidates for seats in the state legislature.
Stay informed:
If you are not directly receiving AKC’s legislative alerts by email, click here to sign up. Learn about key issues affecting dogs and become familiar with AKC GR’s materials you can download and use.
By working together, we can support good legislation like SB 378 and oppose problematic bills, thereby protecting our rights to own, exhibit, breed, and enjoy the dogs we love.

Mike Ramsey Inducted into the SPO Hall of Fame

Picture

Belton, SC - Congratulations to our own Mike Ramsey.  It's such a special honor for him and so well deserved.  Mike has been involved with beagles since his early years.  Its best that he tells you how it began 'In his own words'.

Im
agine the joy of a young boy going rabbit hunting with his father!  That is how my love of beagling began.  My dad had a pack of grade dogs, and we would kill about twenty rabbits every time we loaded them up and went hunting.  Those were fun times and treasured memories.
Yet I found that I liked running dogs, training puppies and watching them develop more so than killing rabbits.  Part of this was due to the influence of a good friend, William Pratt Ferguson, a Hall of Fame brace beagler.  He got me involved in brace trials and taught me how to breed beagles to get the traits that I wanted.  On his advice, I studied thousands of pedigrees to better understand genetics.  Later I decided that I wanted more of a hunting type beagle, so I started going to SPO trials.  I realized quickly this was the type of dog that I wanted – one that has the versatility to hunt and complete in field trials. I found some males I liked that were Gay bred and crossed them with my brace females.  Within a couple of crosses, I had a female named Bullocks Creek Jane Ann.  She had Gay, Buzz Bomb, and Little Man bloodlines.  I bred her to Double M’s Cocoa Bear, and that was the cross that really got me going as it resulted in FC Bullocks Creek Smoke and FC Bullocks Creek Hoss!
As of today, I have produced over 30 field champions out of my kennel.  I have personally finished 14 hounds, and three of my males have produced 13 champions each.  The only one I didn’t breed was FC Phil’s Line Drive Jake.  He was out of FC Bullocks Creek Smoke.  My dear friend Phil Nixon was the breeder of record for Jake.
My goal in beagling has been to help the breed by producing versatile dogs built for hunting and trialing.  In 2016 I was the UBGF Breeder of the Year, and in 2010, I had the top performing 13” female in UBGF.  I serve on the Board of Directors for Foothills Beagle Club.  My desire is to help fellow beaglers by looking at their pedigrees and suggesting crosses that might work best, by sharing information on treatments for different conditions their beagles might have, and by nurturing the love of beagling in young fellows in the sport.  Denzel Washington says it best: “at the end of the day, it’s not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished.  It’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better.  It’s about what you’ve given back."

Norman Wilson Canoy
"Ole Norm"

Belton, SC - It's with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Norm Canoy.  Norm was a long time Foothills member and he will be sorely missed.  Though he had been inactive during the last several years for heath issues, he was still active in his support of the club where possible.  I'm sad that he is gone but am so glad I had the opportunity to have known him.  Following is the obituary :
Picture
Norman Wilson Canoy "Ole Norm", climbed up the eternal tree stand to sit with Christ Sunday, October 10, 2021, he was 86 years old. He left this world from his home on his farm in Central, SC, with his beloved wife of 26 years and tireless caregiver, Kathryn," Mema," Long Canoy, by his side.
Born in Sophia, NC on May 14, 1935, he was the son of the late Edgar Wilson Canoy and the late Reba Mae Farlow Canoy Killingsworth. Norman attended Greensboro Senior High School where he earned the nickname, Rooster, as he commanded the football team as an offensive lineman. He played in the NC/SC Shrine Bowl as a senior, and in 1953, left for Clemson University on a full football scholarship.
While in college, Norman met Oneida, "Nita," Newton Canoy at a Clemson football game. Later the two married, and moved back to Greensboro, where Norm went to work for his father at Greensboro Concrete for a while, but it wasn't long before the rolling hills and green pastures of Clemson drew them back home. They had a great run for twenty-five years sharing in everything from real estate developing, Canoy Inc.; a contracting business for Southern Railway, Ole Norm's Building Supply and Hardware, to winning state archery tournaments at Keowee Bowman Club, which they were part of its original organizers and members. The highlight of their merger was their two surviving daughters, Karen Canoy Alexander (Wes) of Central, and Norma Canoy Newton (Todd) of Clemson.

Norm was fond of saying, "you can find that in chapter ____ in my book". He was an authority on almost everything. From boxing an ape to single handedly wrestling a wild boar with 4" tusks to the ground (at 63 years old), the crazier his stories - the more you knew they were true. Fashion was always of great importance to Norm, as he regularly wore plaid shirts that most assuredly came from the early 70's – even under his hunting camouflage, so he could get straight to work after a morning turkey hunt. He would drive a truck until it had to be towed to the farm one last time. He paid cash, and if he couldn't– it waited. While still working as a heavy equipment contractor for Southern Railway, Norm decided to turn his passion into a business, and from 1975 to 2007, owned and operated Ole Norm's Building Supply, and Sporting Goods in Clemson. If they didn't have it at Ole Norm's, chances are… you didn't need it!
He was half-critter and had a passion for land and hunting - and for sharing that passion with his daughters, buddies and 'trainees,' as he liked to call them. At Medway Plantation and Middleton Place near Charleston, SC he helped create world-class bowhunting venues. He was a pioneer in bowhunting with the invention and mass production of the "Lil Red", one of the very first sight lights for archery. "Head Dog Critter Control", as he proclaimed himself, was an absolute authority on bowhunting in the Southeast and had harvested well over 300 deer when he hung up his bow in 1999.

He refused to adjust his watch for daylight savings time, because it messed with his hunting schedule - although "schedule" was a loose term with Norm. He operated on Canoy Standard Time, which is to say he was never late for anything - he just showed up when he wanted to.
Norm had more pages of that book to write when he married Kathryn Long Smith in 1995. The two jumped into beagle field trials, as Norm had done with his dad many years earlier. On the road every week during the season, he was winning and creating field champion beagles. YONAC Kennels, (Canoy spelled backwards), was born, and folks from all over the US came to breed and buy dogs from Norm and Kathryn.
Of Baptist faith, Norm would much rather teach a man to fish than give him one, and his patience was only exceeded by his generosity and willingness to share his knowledge. Norm had no tolerance for mediocrity; if something was worth doing - do it right! He told it like he saw it, which was a breath of fresh air in the watered down, tiptoeing, and easily offended society we live in.
Norm was preceded in death by his younger sister and biggest fan, Sandra Canoy Stanford (Rick) of Greensboro. In addition to his daughters and loving wife, he is also survived by his former son in law, Ken Alexander, stepson, Russell Ables (Tammie), grandchildren, Kipp Canoy Alexander (Jessie), Christopher James Newton, step grandchildren, James P. Ables, Kayla A. Kelley (Mackenzie), Kevin Jackson (Morgan), and Nachelle Strickland (Andy). Great grandchildren, Aubrie and Ayla Alexander and step- great grandchildren, Kason and Alora Jackson, Austin and Teagan Strickland and Kathryn (Katie) Kelley. Norm also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Rick Stanford from Greensboro.
The family would like to express their immeasurable gratitude to the steady stream of doctors, nurses, EMS responders and Patriot Care who elevated Norm's quality of life during these past few years.
A Private graveside service was held at Memory Gardens, Clemson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dave Thomas Foundation, Clemson Paw Partners or to The Ronald McDonald House.
Condolences may be expressed online at www.robinsonfuneralhomes.com or at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central, SC which is assisting the family.

2) a group needs to walk the fence line in all the pens to reinforce any bad posts with metal ones.  Will need a driver if someone can bring one.  Also, need to patch any holes in the fence (pliers, wire cutters, etc. needed).
3) the partition fence between the front and back needs to be fixed in several places, especially around the gates to prevent dogs/rabbits from getting through.
4)  yard work  -  weed eating, grass mowing, etc. around the club house.
5) water containers in the enclosures need to be cleaned (scrubbed with a brush) Rhett Hand has completed cleaning the water drums.  Weed eating around the water spigots needs to be done also.
6)  clean out a walk path (approx 3 feet wide) around inside of puppy pen.  This will facilitate the necessary check of the wire periodically.
7) anything else that you feel is needed
Come and lets help make Foothills the best Beagle Club around.  Hope to see you Saturday.
